Pumps

Hayward_We_Build_Better_Lockup_4C_WHT.png

The pump is essentially the heart of the swimming pool's circulation system. Your pool's circulation system comprises the elements of your pool that take water from the pool, filters it, sanitizes it, and returns the water back to the pool. If your pump is not running, the water from your pool is not being properly circulated or filtered.

Pumps

Hayward pumps are engineered for dependability and performance. Recognized as the industry leader, our full range of varieble speed, high performance and medium head pumps lead the way in energy efficiency, including Australia's first 9 star energy rated pool pump. Our pumps are equipped with heavy-duty motors for cool, quiet, and efficient operation. Engineered and designed to stand-up to today's most demanding installations, our pumps set the standard of performance for swimming pool, spa and waterfall pumps.

Variable Speed Pump Benefits

It may be surprising to learn that a single speed pool pump can be the second largest consumption of energy in your house after heating and air conditioning. With the installation of a variable speed pump, it is possible to cut the associated energy costs up to 90%, which can translate to hundreds of dollars every year.

As with most advanced, more efficient products, variable speed pumps cost more than single speed pumps. This incremental investment is often recovered in energy savings in less than two years.

To calculate your potential savings, visit Hayward's energy calculator.

In addition to incredible energy savings, variable speed pumps offer additional benefits such as:

  • Noticeably quieter than traditional pumps, not to go unnoticed especially in a home with a smaller space

  • Advanced motor technology: totally enclosed fan cooled (TEFC) design provide added reliability compared to standard pool pump motors

  • Allow for better and more effective pool filtration through slower water filtration rates.

Sanitisation

No more mixing, measuring and messing around with liquid or tablet chlorine again. No more red eyes, itchy skin or chemical odors. Now you can automatically turn ordinary salt into a self-regenerating supply of pure chlorine for both pool and spa water that's clean, clear and luxuriously soft. Salt chlorination has become the simple, safe and affordable alternative to using harsh, chemically-produced chlorine to sanitise pools and spas.

Filtration

The Importance and Function of Filters

To prepare you to choose the perfect filter, let's start with explaining the job of the filter in your pool. The filter and pump are the heart and lungs of the pool circulation and filtration system. The primary purpose of the filter is to keep your pool clean by removing undissolved debris from the pool water.

How the Filter Works

Pool water comes from the circulation pump into the filter where small debris particles are removed through depth or surface filtration, and then goes on to the heater or back to the pool.

A filter works through mechanical separation of water and debris through surface or depth filtration. Sand filters use special filter sand, cartridge filters pass water through a fibrous element, and DE filters pass water through a thin layer of diatomaceous earth that is coated onto a grid.

A gauge located on the filter or valve can be used to measure the back pressure or resistance in your filter system. When the pressure increases by 10 psi, the filter should be cleaned to reduce resistance and improve water flow.

Cartridge filters require disassembly and cleaning of the cartridge periodically to remove debris from the filter.

Sand filters require periodic backwashing to remove debris from the filter. To accomplish this water is directed through the pool filter by a valve (multiport, vertical, or other). Once the water runs through the filter, it flows to the pool heater or back into the pool. To backwash, the valve is manipulated to reverse flow and direct debris-filled water to waste.

Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters offer excellent filtration, long cleaning cycles and the utmost in energy efficiency and water conservation. Available in sizes from 100-530 square feet of filtration area, Hayward offers a cartridge filter for any pool. They do not require backwashing, allowing for massive water savings. The elimination of a backwash valve minimizes restriction resulting in less demand on the pump and lower energy consumption.

Pool & Spa Heating

Gas Heat or Heat Pump?

Whatever your climate, warmer or cooler, you will want to experience the comfort of heating your pool. Even if the air temperature seems warm enough, it doesn't necessarily mean your pool's water is comfortable enough to swim in.

The only way to continuously enjoy your pool is to heat the water to the perfect temperature, there are pool and spa heating solutions for every application, budget and climate - let's explore them.

Gas Heat

The greatest benefit of gas pool and spa heaters is that they heat your pool and spa in minutes or hours versus the hours or days required initially to warm the pool with a heat pump. Gas heat is ideal if you don't use your pool or spa on a daily basis, and just want to heat your pool or spa as needed. Key attributes of Hayward's gas pool heaters are that they're environmentally responsible and lower the cost of ownership via its energy efficiency and reliability.

Another benefit of gas pool heaters is they perform well in any climate. They'll heat your pool and spa on the coldest of days versus the limits of a heat pump.

Heat Pump

Heat pumps are incredibly energy efficient at maintaining a constant water temperature and can deliver savings of up to 70% versus a gas heater. Heat pumps are very efficient because they utilize the heat from the surrounding air to heat the pool's water versus burning natural gas or LPG.

Heat pumps work well in warmer climates but are at a disadvantage in colder climates. Although a heat pump will operate at temperatures above 10 degrees celsius, cooler air temperatures below 10 degrees celsius may not have sufficient heat in the air to keep your pool as warm as you desire. At these lower temperatures a heat pump is likely not the best option for heating your pool.

A Hayward heat pump model is the most efficient way to heat or cool the temperature of your pool or spa. Warmer climates and especially pools and spas with dark surface finishes benefit from the water being cooled. If you live in a climate that can become extremely hot the heat/cool heat pump is a perfect choice.

Combined Benefits – Gas Pool Heater and Heat Pump

A gas heater and heat pump combination will deliver energy savings utilizing the heat pump a majority of the time, and switching to a gas pool heater when the temperature drops. Other benefits include:

  • Most energy efficient way to heat or cool your pool and/or spa in any climate

  • Heat pump efficiently maintains ideal pool temperature while gas heater rapidly raises spa temperature on demand

  • The ability to choose between heat pump or gas heat on cooler days and in colder climate.
